Hedge Trimming

Cedar hedges and bushes are great privacy screens and wind barriers, as they have very dense foliage.  Cedars can grow about 3-6 inches a year in width and a foot or more in height.  Regular trimming and shaping is needed to control this annual growth, and to keep the width of the hedge the same.  Most cedars have a personality so it is important to know how much you should trim them, with importance given not to create a hole to expose the interior. Hedges that encroach on driveways, sidewalks and pools require more attention to inhibit large outward growth.

Cedar Height Reduction

Cedar hedges can quickly become very tall, often causing too much shade, growing into utility lines, and blocking rainfall and sunlight that needs to penetrate the hedge.  Cedars can survive heavy reductions in height, and although reducing them by more than a third is not recommended. Regular topping is a better solution.

Repairing

Many cedars sustain damage during the winter from heavy wet snow and ice, crushing the tops of the hedge.  Old hedges are often thinner and taller and more prone to damage, which often results in long limbs being bent to the ground under the weight.  This is called blossoming and needs immediate repair!  We have a great deal of experience in this area, and the ability to remedy or stop the damage.

Hedge Maintenance

It is essential that shaping and trimming is started early in the life of the hedge, and is then carried out regularly.  Hedges grow healthy when all aspects of care are enforced, along with fertilizer and other trade secrets.
